It’s officially summer, which means it’s finally warmer weather in Seattle! I swear people really only live here for the 3-4 gorgeous summer months of the year… or is that just me? Anyways, let’s talk about hydration! We all know how important it is year round, but I wanted to list some of the benefits guzzling down H20 throughout the day can have on you. I also think it might be one of the most forgotten and underrated ways to up your health game and just feel better on a daily basis. Hydration is tied to SO MANY aspects of our overall health that whenever people tell me they’re trying to lose weight, feel better in general, increase their energy, etc., one of the first things I mention is staying hydrated!!
To give you a breakdown of just a few of the things hydration effects, here’s a quick list:
DAILY ENERGY LEVELS
When you’re drinking water and hydrating your body, you’re actually providing energy to your muscles. This is extra important on workout days when you’ve put those muscles to work, but your muscles NEED that boost of energy every single day– workout or not! Increase your water intake and I promise you’ll notice a difference in fatigue and your daily energy level.
Having a breakout or noticing some extra wrinkles? Hydrate! When you’re not drinking enough water your skin is unable to release any toxins from your body so they stay in the skin and cause outward side effects like breakouts, pre-mature wrinkles, eczema, etc.
The water you drink before and during your workouts plays a huge part in how your body responds. First, being hydrated means your body can maintain a more stable blood pressure so your heart doesn’t have to work too hard. Second, you’ll have better circulation if you are hydrated, which means your body can deliver nutrients like oxygen to your muscles while they’re working hard.
So staying hydrated is clearly very important, but how can you incorporate it into your routine and make it a habit? Here are some ideas below!
–Flavor your water with fruits + veggies
Basic idea but so effective! You can go classic and drop in a bunch of sliced lemons and limes, or now that strawberries are in season add in a few of those. Cucumbers and lime is an amazing combo, or mint and cucumber. Orange slices and blueberries– the list goes on and on!
Another idea is adding electrolyte powder to your water anytime throughout the day. I’ve been loving Ultima electrolytes, especially the lemonade, watermelon and pink lemonade flavors. They provide 6 electrolytes and trace minerals that help support optimal hydration and replenish electrolytes lost through activity and sweat. Electrolytes play a huge role in muscle and nerve function, fluid balance in the body, temperature and blood pressure regulation, and keeping your system functioning properly. I wouldn’t add them to every bottle you drink like you can do with fruits and veggies, but Ultima stick packs are made with zero added sugar, organic stevia and real fruit flavor extracts. I don’t like a lot of other brands because they have added sugar, which is something you don’t need when you’re trying to stay hydrated.
–Carry a water bottle with you 24/7
This might feel like a hassle at first, but after some time it’ll feel natural. I recommend grabbing a 32oz bottle like this one (I take it everywhere with me) or even going bigger and buying one of these that has a day’s worth of water in it.
–Start your day with a big glass of water
Right when you wake up drink a large glass of room temperature water. Sounds kinda weird but it’s invigorating and always helps wake me up. Plus it’s nice to already have 12-20 ounces down first thing in the morning!
Hopefully this was helpful and reinforces why hydration is so important to your overall health!! 🙂
