Walking into the gym can feel intimidating, whether you’re brand new or just getting back into your post-summer (or anytime!) routine. My goal is always for you to feel comfortable in a gym setting—whether that’s your local gym, a hotel gym, or even your own garage. Once you’re familiar with these gym etiquette tips, you’ll feel more confident, make the most of your workouts, and help create a positive environment for yourself and everyone around you.

I’m sharing these simple basics of gym etiquette to help you navigate the weight room, feel less “gymtimidated” (we’ve all been there!), and get in a great workout without the stress. Here are the top pointers to keep in mind!

Why Gym Etiquette Matters

Gym etiquette isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being considerate. Following a few simple “workout etiquette” guidelines makes it easier for you and everyone around you to enjoy their training, and use equipment efficiently and safely. Plus, knowing the unspoken rules of the gym will definitely help you feel more confident when you step inside.

8 Gym Etiquette Tips to Follow:

1. Arrive Prepared

Look over your workout before you get to the gym so you know which equipment you’ll need. This not only saves time but also helps you plan around busy areas. Confidence comes from preparation, so those few extra minutes of planning are always worth it. If you’re looking for workout inspiration, my strength & fitness guides provide structure and guidance, whether you’re training at home or in the gym.

2. Re-Rack Your Weights

One of the golden rules of gym etiquette: always re-rack your dumbbells, plates, or bars after you’re finished. Leaving weights scattered makes it harder (and less safe) for others to use the space.

3. Share Equipment and Space

If the squat rack or cable machine is busy, be patient! You can walk on an incline treadmill while you wait, modify with dumbbells, or ask politely if they’re almost done, or if you can “work in” once the other person finishes their set. The key is to avoid interrupting someone mid-lift—wait until they’ve racked their weights (a good gym etiquette tip to keep in mind).

4. Use One Station at a Time

Try not to “claim” multiple benches or machines at once. Keeping your setup simple helps everyone get their workouts in more smoothly.

5. Respect the Squat Rack

Squat racks are limited in most gyms, so use your time efficiently. If you’re finished squatting, consider moving to a different station to complete accessory lifts so others can use the rack.

6. Be Aware of Others

Little things go a long way:

  • Avoid walking in front of someone using the mirror to check form.
  • Drop weights safely, if needed, but always check that there is a safe distance between yours and your neighbor’s feet.
  • Don’t hover too close to someone mid-set, it can be distracting.

7. Clean Up After Yourself

Wipe down any bench, bar, or machine you’ve used. This is one of the most important gym etiquette tips for hygiene and respect. Even in a home gym, a quick wipe-down keeps things fresh, tidy, and helps your equipment last longer.

8. When in Doubt, Ask!

Still learning your way around the gym? Don’t hesitate to ask gym staff for help. Most people appreciate the effort (gym manners! lol), and it’s far better than guessing how to use a machine incorrectly.

Take These Tips Into Your Next Workout

Navigating the gym doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Like most things, it gets easier the more you do it, I promise! By following these gym etiquette tips and workout etiquette basics, you’ll not only feel more confident but also make the gym a more enjoyable and welcoming space for yourself. Whether you’re lifting heavy, hopping on a treadmill, or easing back into a routine, I hope these simple tips help you stay on track and get the most from every workout.
