My son recently turned 2, and this healthy chocolate frosting completely stole the show at his truck-themed birthday party. I paired it with my Healthy Vanilla Banana Birthday Cake for Kids, and honestly, everyone was scraping the frosting off their plates.

It’s rich, creamy, naturally sweetened with Medjool dates, and made with simple ingredients like cacao powder, coconut cream, and almond butter. If you’ve been looking for a refined sugar-free chocolate frosting that actually tastes like the real thing, this recipe is it.

Why You’ll Love This Healthy Chocolate Frosting

As a registered dietitian, I’ve chosen to keep added sugar pretty limited during Hayes’ first couple of years—not because I’m afraid of sugar, but because I know these early years are a great opportunity to help kids develop a love for real, wholesome foods first. (I have a whole blog on Why Limiting Added Sugar in Babies’ First 1,000 Days Matters, if you’re interested!)

There will be plenty of birthday parties, ice cream runs, and special treats in his future, but when I’m making something at home, I love creating recipes that are both delicious and made with ingredients that offer a little more nutrition, like this healthy chocolate frosting.

  • Naturally sweetened: Medjool dates add rich sweetness while providing fiber—no powdered sugar needed.
  • Rich and creamy: Coconut cream and almond butter create a smooth, luscious texture that tastes just like traditional chocolate frosting.
  • Simple ingredients: Made with just six pantry-friendly ingredients in about 10 minutes of hands-on time.
  • Dairy-free and gluten-free: A great option for a variety of dietary needs without sacrificing flavor.
  • Perfect for more than cake: Spread it on cupcakes, brownies, cookies, or pair it with my Healthy Vanilla Banana Birthday Cake for Kids.

If you’re making a birthday dessert or simply looking for a healthier chocolate frosting to keep on hand, this is a recipe worth repeating for years to come.

Recipe Substitutions & Questions

Here are a few easy substitutions and swaps to help you customize this Healthy Chocolate Date Frosting based on what you have on hand or your dietary needs.

  • Medjool dates: Use soft, fresh Medjool dates for the best texture and natural sweetness. If your dates are dry, soak them a little longer until softened.
  • Coconut cream: Full-fat canned coconut cream creates the creamiest frosting. You can also use the thick cream scooped from the top of a chilled can of full-fat coconut milk.
  • Cacao powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder works just as well if that’s what you have on hand. Dutch-process cocoa will create a slightly richer, darker chocolate flavor.
  • Almond butter: Creamy cashew butter is the best substitute. For a nut-free option, use sunflower seed butter, though it may slightly alter the flavor and color.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla extract and vanilla bean paste are interchangeable in this recipe.
  • Sea salt: Fine kosher salt can be substituted if needed. Use slightly more if substituting coarse kosher salt.

FAQs

Can I make this healthy chocolate frosting without a food processor?

Yes! A food processor works best for creating the smooth, creamy texture of this healthy chocolate frosting, but you can also use a high-speed blender if that’s what you have available. Since the dates need to break down completely, I recommend soaking them until very soft and blending with the coconut cream first to help everything combine smoothly. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides a few times or add an extra splash of coconut cream to help it blend.

Can I use cocoa powder instead of cacao powder?

Yes, unsweetened cocoa powder can be used in place of cacao powder in this frosting. Cacao powder has a slightly deeper, more natural chocolate flavor, while cocoa powder will give the frosting a classic chocolate taste. Either option will create a rich, chocolatey frosting.

How do you make frosting with dates taste sweet?

Medjool dates are naturally sweet and have a rich, caramel-like flavor that makes them a great base for naturally sweetened desserts. When blended with cacao powder, coconut cream, and almond butter, they create a creamy chocolate frosting without needing powdered sugar or other sweeteners. The key is using soft, fresh Medjool dates and soaking them first so they blend into a smooth consistency.
