We already know that superfoods like blueberries, kale, salmon, avocado, etc. are exceptionally rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and therefore should be included in our diet frequently. But recently, I’ve been thinking about superfoods in a different way, and looking at the foods I eat on a daily basis for my overall health. The one food group I’m thinking about might take you by surprise: beef.
Beef is not typically considered a “superfood” in the same way that other foods are, but the nutritional benefits should not be ignored. Let’s get into a few reasons I’ve been loving incorporating more beef into my diet, and then I’ll round up some of my favorite recipes for you below. Remember that choosing a higher-quality ‘grass-fed’ and ‘organic’ option will provide even more beneficial fatty acids for human health compared to conventional beef/meats (source).
The Benefits Of Beef
- Protein Quality & Satiety. Beef is an excellent source of high-quality protein, containing all the essential amino acids needed for muscle repair and growth. Eating beef will not only help to maintain muscle mass, but will also help promote recovery after workouts, and hit the MPS threshold (read more on that here). Getting sufficient protein is really the only way to feel satiated after a meal or snack. Beef is high in protein, and organic grass-fed beef is my favorite option for cooking. Even grabbing a beef stick for on-the-go is a great option.
- Nutrient Density. We can get essential nutrients (for example, iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and other B vitamins) that are necessary to maintaining a healthy lifestyle from eating beef.
- Iron. Beef is an excellent source of heme iron, which is more readily absorbed by the body than non-heme iron (found in plant-based sources). Iron is essential for transporting oxygen throughout the body, and contributes to overall energy levels, recovery, fatigue, and staying balanced and healthy in general.
Aside from the nutritional benefits of beef, there are so many ways to cook beef that it’s a sure crowd pleaser in any home. I keep ground beef stocked in my fridge because it’s so versatile and easy to cook with! If you’re looking for inspo, try one of the recipes below – these are some of my absolute favorites. Beef Fried Rice
We have this at least once a week – it’s so easy and so tasty! Make a double batch and thank me later. Click here for the recipe.
Crockpot Pot Roast
If you’re looking for something more elevated, you have to try my crockpot pot roast. It went viral for a good reason! This one takes just a few minutes to throw together, and you’ll be smelling the insanely delicious dish all day while it cooks. Click here for the recipe.
One Pan Lasagna Skillet
This recipe does not have the fame it deserves because omg it is out of this world. The best and easiest meal to make if you find yourself with a pound of ground beef in your fridge. I absolutely love a one-pan meal, and this one does not disappoint. Click here for the recipe.
Enchilada Skillet
The original recipe is perfect as is, but recently I’ve been making my claim-to-fame one-pan dinner with grass-fed ground beef instead of ground turkey. Equally as delish, and I think you’ll love it just as much as I do. Click here for the recipe.
